HARARE, Zimbabwe - Pacific Cigarette Company has announced a $2 million investment in rural community development projects across Zimbabwe, reinforcing the company's commitment to social responsibility and sustainable development. The comprehensive program will benefit over 25,000 people in rural communities over the next 18 months.
The investment package includes infrastructure development, educational support, healthcare facility upgrades, and agricultural extension services. The initiative, named "Kushandira Pamwe" (Working Together), reflects PCC's philosophy of shared prosperity and community partnership.
"Our success as a company is intrinsically linked to the wellbeing of the communities where we operate," said Grace Mukamuri, PCC's Director of Corporate Social Responsibility. "This investment represents our commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen and contributing to Zimbabwe's development goals."
The infrastructure component includes the construction of 15 boreholes in water-scarce areas, rehabilitation of 50 kilometers of rural roads, and the installation of solar-powered lighting systems in 10 rural business centers. These projects will improve access to clean water, enhance transportation links, and extend productive hours for local businesses.
In education, PCC will construct three new classroom blocks, renovate 20 existing classrooms, and provide learning materials to 15 rural schools. The company will also establish a scholarship program for 100 disadvantaged students to pursue secondary and tertiary education.
The healthcare component involves upgrading five rural clinics with modern equipment, training healthcare workers, and supporting maternal health programs. PCC will also launch mobile health clinics to serve remote areas with limited access to healthcare services.
Agricultural support includes providing improved seed varieties, fertilizers, and training to 1,000 small-scale farmers. The program aims to increase agricultural productivity and food security in participating communities while promoting sustainable farming practices.
The initiative will be implemented in partnership with local traditional leaders, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations to ensure community ownership and sustainability. Progress will be monitored through regular community feedback sessions and impact assessments.
This investment builds on PCC's existing community development programs, which have already benefited over 50,000 people since the company's establishment in 2002. The company has previously invested in education, healthcare, and infrastructure projects worth over $8 million.
