HARARE, Zimbabwe - Pacific Cigarette Company has unveiled an ambitious environmental sustainability program that positions the company as a leader in responsible tobacco manufacturing across Africa. The comprehensive initiative, valued at $5 million over three years, focuses on sustainable farming practices, renewable energy adoption, and community environmental education.
The program, dubbed "Green Leaf Initiative," encompasses four key pillars: sustainable agriculture, renewable energy transition, waste reduction, and community environmental stewardship. The initiative aligns with Zimbabwe's National Climate Policy and contributes to the country's commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement.
"Environmental sustainability is not just a corporate responsibility; it's essential for the long-term viability of our industry and the communities we serve," said Dr. Patricia Chivasa, PCC's newly appointed Director of Sustainability. "The Green Leaf Initiative represents our commitment to being part of the solution to climate change."
Under the sustainable agriculture pillar, PCC will work with over 2,000 contracted tobacco farmers to implement climate-smart farming techniques, including drought-resistant tobacco varieties, efficient irrigation systems, and integrated pest management. The company will provide training and financial support to help farmers transition to these sustainable practices.
The renewable energy component involves installing solar panels at all PCC facilities, with the goal of achieving 60% renewable energy usage by 2026. The company has already begun construction of a 2MW solar farm at its Harare manufacturing plant, which will reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 1,500 tons annually.
PCC's waste reduction strategy includes implementing circular economy principles in its operations, with targets to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2027. The company will also launch a comprehensive recycling program for cigarette packaging materials.
The community environmental stewardship pillar focuses on education and tree-planting initiatives. PCC plans to plant 100,000 indigenous trees over the next three years and establish environmental education programs in 50 rural schools.
The initiative has received endorsement from the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) and the Zimbabwe Climate Change Management Department, positioning PCC as a model for sustainable business practices in the region.
